On hygiene

Metal tools are washed, bagged and autoclaved between every guest. Files, buffers and pedicure bowl liners are used once and thrown away. If you would like to see the pouch opened in front of you, just ask — we would rather you did.

Russian dry manicure, explained

A conventional manicure softens the hands in water, then cuts the cuticle with nippers. The Russian method skips the soak entirely and uses a small electric file with a fine bit to lift and remove only the dead tissue sitting on the nail plate, leaving the living cuticle intact.

Two things follow from that. First, the nail plate is exposed further back, so polish can be laid closer to the skin — which is why a Russian set grows out as a clean crescent rather than a visible ledge, and why it holds for three to four weeks rather than two. Second, because there is no soaking, the nail is not swollen during application, so the product does not lift as the nail returns to its normal size.

It takes longer and demands more skill. It is worth the extra half hour if you are the kind of person who notices regrowth on day ten.

Choosing a finish

Gel polish is the everyday option — two to three weeks of hard-wearing colour. Jelly is the same product in a sheer, translucent build for a softer look. Cat eye uses magnetic particles pulled into a band of light that shifts as your hand moves. Mirror chrome is a metallic powder burnished over cured gel. Ombre fades one colour into another across the nail.

BIAB — builder in a bottle — is a flexible gel laid over the natural nail as a protective layer. If your nails split, peel or refuse to grow past the fingertip, this is the treatment that changes that, and it can be infilled rather than removed.

Extensions and length

Gel X uses a pre-shaped soft tip fitted to your nail bed and bonded full-coverage — fast, light, and easy to remove without damage. Dual form builds the extension in a mould, giving more control over the shape and a thinner finish. Acrylic and hard gel remain the strongest options for anyone hard on their hands.

Length is a lifestyle choice more than a style one. If you type all day or have small children, shorter almost always ends better.

Looking after them

Wear gloves for washing up and cleaning — repeated hot water and detergent is what lifts an edge and starts a peel. Oil your cuticles daily; it keeps the surrounding skin flexible and the set looking fresh for longer. Never peel a lifting edge, and never use your nails as tools.

Come back for removal rather than picking. Picking takes layers of your natural nail with it, and it is the reason people believe gel ruins nails when what ruined them was the removal.

If your nails are in poor condition

Tell us at the start. Thin, peeling or damaged nails are usually better served by a hardening base or a BIAB overlay than by extensions, and we would rather build them back over a few visits than sell you something that makes it worse.
