Japanese head spa or Vietnamese gội đầu dưỡng sinh?

Both are sold as head spa in Saigon. They come from different places, do different things, and suit different scalps. Here is how to tell them apart before you book.

They are not the same treatment

Walk down any street in District 1 and you will see both words on the same signboard. Head spa. Gội đầu dưỡng sinh. Most places offer something they call both, and most customers book whichever comes up first on Google. The two traditions are genuinely different, and the difference is not marketing.

Where each one comes from

Gội đầu dưỡng sinh is Vietnamese, and it is old. The phrase means roughly “hair washing for nurturing life” — dưỡng sinh is the same idea that sits behind traditional exercise and food practice here. The treatment grew out of a culture where washing someone else's hair is an ordinary, unhurried, slightly social act, closer to a barber's shave than to a salon rinse.

Japanese head spa is recent by comparison and came out of the hair-care industry rather than the wellness one. It was built around a problem: scalps that were oily, flaking, or coated in product, and hair that went limp at the root because of it. The method is diagnostic first and relaxing second.

What actually differs in the chair

The Vietnamese treatment is built on time and repetition. Warm water, herbal preparations, and a scalp worked in stages — the hairline, the base of the skull, behind the ears — with rinses between each stage. Nothing is hurried, because the effect comes from the pace. A good one runs somewhere between thirty minutes and two hours and often extends into the neck, shoulders and face.

The Japanese treatment starts by looking. A technician assesses the scalp, sometimes with a magnifier, and then works to clear build-up out of the follicles — usually with a fine-bubble or micro-bubble rinse, sometimes with a clay or carbonated preparation. The massage comes after the cleanse rather than being the whole point of it.

Put simply: one is a treatment that happens to clean your scalp, and the other is a cleanse that happens to feel wonderful.

Which one your scalp wants

Take the Vietnamese version if what you are carrying is tension rather than a scalp problem. Tension headaches, a jaw you clench, shoulders sitting somewhere near your ears, sleep that has not been working. It is also the better choice if you simply want the hour — it is the more pleasant of the two by a distance.

Take the Japanese version if the complaint is the scalp itself. An oily root two days after washing, flaking, itch, product build-up from dry shampoo or styling cream, or hair that will not hold volume at the root. It leaves the hair noticeably lighter, and people with fine hair usually notice it most.

If you are not sure, book the Vietnamese one. It is more forgiving, and almost nobody regrets it.

What it should cost

In Ho Chi Minh City the honest range for a real treatment is roughly 130.000₫ to 900.000₫ depending on length and what is included. Below about 100.000₫ you are usually buying a quick wash rather than a ritual. We have written about what drives head spa prices here in more detail.

Things worth asking before you book

  • Is the herbal preparation made fresh, or poured from a bulk bottle?
  • How long is the actual scalp work, as opposed to the total appointment?
  • Is the basin chair a reclining one? A Western salon basin means craning your neck for an hour.
  • Is a blow-dry included at the end, or do you leave damp?

None of these are trick questions. Any place doing it properly will answer them without hesitating.

What we do

Our six rituals are built on the Vietnamese method — herbal wash, staged scalp work, reclining basin, blow-dry at the end — with the diagnostic scalp cleanse of the Japanese approach available within the longer treatments for anyone whose scalp needs it. If you tell us which of the two problems you actually have when you book, we will point you at the right one, including when the right one is the cheaper one.
